The user onboarding is the one important part of user journey which many Product Managers skip .\u00a0 We could consider on-boarding as the first step towards a trustworthy relationship with your future consumer.<\/p>\n

A comparison study \u00a0Canvas vs Piktograph has been presented to show the on-boarding process and also the best practices covered<\/p>\n

To give e brief intro of Canvas & Piktograph , both helps you creating user friendly form with wide level of applications<\/p>\n

Every tool has a different function, a different audience, context as well as a different interface. If the first run experience for Canva<\/a> was nearly identical to the first run experience for, say, Typeform<\/a>\u2014well, something would be dangerously wrong with one or both of those experiences.<\/p>\n

However, while you can\u2019t hold up Canva to Typeform, you can <\/em>hold it up to\u00a0Piktograph<\/a>. Both apps promise to make design easy, speedy, and most importantly, accessible to even the least design-savvy folks<\/strong>. You can use either to make infographics, social media posts, reports, posters, and more.<\/p>\n

I would like to use this post to explain how I would evaluate these two products on-boarding. Without further ado, let\u2019s take a look at Canva and Piktochart\u2019s flows.<\/p>\n

Signing Up<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When it comes to their homepage\u2014the launching point for their onboarding experiences\u2014Canva and Piktochart took extremely different approaches.<\/p>\n

\"1\"<\/p>\n

Canva\u2019s is simple\u2014apart from the sign-up box and the two quotes, there\u2019s not much going on. You can navigate to other pages using the footer menu; however, these links are so subtle it\u2019s unlikely many people will use them.<\/p>\n

This means users are driven toward one action: signing up. And because Canva lets you do so with Facebook or Google, there\u2019s little friction. Even if you choose to manually enter your email, Canva doesn\u2019t require you to open a confirmation emailor <\/em>enter your password twice.<\/p>\n

\"2\"\"1\"<\/p>\n

Piktochart\u2019s homepage, on the other hand, is designed to show you the platform\u2019s main features. There\u2019s a lot going on; between the screenshots, videos, multiple navigation options, and rotating carousels, the user quickly gets overwhelmed.<\/p>\n

Once you do click \u201cSign up,\u201d you\u2019re taken to a new page that reiterates Piktochart\u2019s benefits. The CTA is hidden beneath the fold\u2014which further slows down the process.<\/p>\n

Winner: Canva<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Learning the Ropes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After you\u2019ve signed up to Canva, there\u2019s an intermediary screen asking for your central use case. Awesome, now you can have a more personalized experience!<\/p>\n

But this is actually a wasted opportunity\u2014I experimented by choosing all three options, and each onboarding process was exactly the same.<\/p>\n

Next, you can watch a \u201c23-second guide to beautiful design in Canva.\u201d Not only does this video quickly show you around the app, it\u2019s also fun and engaging. (But 23 seconds isn\u2019t actually correct: it\u2019s actually 32.)<\/p>\n

Piktochart gives new users much less support. Once you\u2019ve logged in, you see the main Piktochart dashboard.<\/p>\n

A chat window pops up, suggesting you choose a template for your first design (rather than start from scratch). There are also links to not one but four <\/em>ebooks.<\/p>\n

While ebooks are a fantastic medium for really diving into a topic, they\u2019re less than ideal for onboarding. Anyone who\u2019s excited about creating her first design isn\u2019t going to want to stop, drop everything, and read through a 37-page ebook (let alone four).<\/p>\n

Plus, even after you click on the type of design you want to create, it\u2019s not immediately clear what happens next. Turns out you need to scroll down to choose a template for that design. Since these templates are beneath the fold, it\u2019s likely many users will give up in frustration before finding them.<\/p>\n

WINNER: CANVA<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Reaching the First Console<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After Canva\u2019s video, you\u2019re still not completely on your own. The onboarding process continues with the \u201cBeginner\u2019s Challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you follow the directions, within five seconds you\u2019ve changed the color of the circle: a.k.a., your first quick win.<\/p>\n

However, I\u2019d argue this isn\u2019t Canva\u2019s first WOW moment\u2014that comes one second later, when you search for a hat and drag and drop it onto the monkey. This action requires you to combine two features; plus, it\u2019s visually pleasing, light-hearted, and fun! Moving through the rest of the Beginner\u2019s Challenge only gives you more confidence and momentum, so by the time you\u2019ve finished scrolling, you feel great about tackling your real project.<\/p>\n

\"10\"\"11\"<\/p>\n

With Piktochart, on the other hand, you\u2019re immediately working on an actual design. There\u2019s a nifty overlay showing you what\u2019s where; the only problem with this strategy is that once you close it, the reference is permanently gone.<\/p>\n

Clicking on random elements will bring up related tips. It\u2019s nice to have information doled out in chunks, but it also makes the user arbitrarily click everything in sight.<\/p>\n

\"13\"\"14\"<\/p>\n

There is <\/em>a tour, but it\u2019s so buried within the UI you have to assume Piktochart doesn\u2019t want you to find it.<\/p>\n

The good:<\/strong> it clearly shows you how many steps are in the tour and how far along you are. Also, the instructions are straight-forward, and the accompanying GIFs demystify things even more.<\/p>\n

The bad:<\/strong> the user is passive. You don\u2019t get to try out any of the tips until the tour is over, further delaying your WOW moment\u2014and running the risk you\u2019ll leave before it happens.<\/p>\n

WINNER: CANVA<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Taking the Next Steps<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After you finish the Beginner\u2019s Challenge, Canva finally sends you to your dashboard. (Note that you reached this step in Piktochart two steps ago.)<\/p>\n

Rather than leaving that white space totally empty, there\u2019s some reassuring human copy. It\u2019s a good touch.<\/p>\n

I also like that Canva points you toward a social media design (I\u2019m guessing that\u2019s the most popular). But this suggestion could be emphasized much more.<\/p>\n

Once you click \u201cSocial Media,\u201d you\u2019re back in the edit mode from the Beginner\u2019s Challenge.<\/p>\n

You might actually find Piktochart a little easier to use at this stage; after all, you\u2019ve got handy templates to work from, whereas in Canva you\u2019re starting from scratch.<\/p>\n

Also, when you have a question in Piktochart, you can search the help box for answers without leaving your work. In contrast, clicking \u201chelp\u201d in Canva will open a new tab for the app\u2019s support portal.<\/p>\n

WINNER: PIKTOCHART<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Receiving a Welcome Email<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The best onboarding flows incorporate emails<\/a>, so I was excited to see what messages Canva and Piktochart each had in store for me.<\/p>\n

Canva email:<\/p>\n

Canva sent me three. The first was a simple welcome email, giving me links to common new users questions, along with the Help Center.<\/p>\n

The decision to make this email plain-text was wise, as plain-text emails receive higher opens and clicks than HTML and image-based ones<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, this message could be better\u2014it doesn\u2019t remind you what purpose Canva serves or tell you what to do next.<\/p>\n

Piktochart email:<\/p>\n

True to form, Piktochart\u2019s welcome email was much longer and more ornate. Unlike Canva\u2019s, it does a fantastic job summarizing the creation process and highlighting the core function. It is much more visual \u00a0using some widgets that make you want to stay looking.<\/p>\n

WINNER: PIKTOCHART<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Getting Re-Engagement Emails<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I usually hate re-engagement Emails. If I want to come back I will.<\/p>\n

A day after the first email, Canva sends another. Bizarrely, this email was very similar to the first\u2014basically, it nudges you toward helpful resources. But you probably don\u2019t want to visit the blog or pricing page before you\u2019ve logged in and made another design.<\/p>\n

The next day, Canva corrects this error by sending a friendly, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you start your first design?\u201d email. There\u2019s subtle social pressure: the intro urges you to \u201cJoin more than 6 million members designing posters<\/a>, facebook covers<\/a>, business cards<\/a>, blog graphics<\/a>, and much more,\u201d and there\u2019s a glowing testimonial from Joe Vukson underneath. (Minor nitpick: Who\u2019s Joe Vukson?)<\/p>\n

The day after that (so, three days after sign-up), Canva sends a \u201cfeature\u201d email. This message encourages you to start designing with layouts. It\u2019s clean, appealing, and effective.<\/p>\n

Canva basically wins this round by default, because Piktochart doesn\u2019t send a single engagement email. I tried making accounts where I logged in frequently, infrequently, or not at all\u2014but no matter what I did, zero messages landed in my inbox. What a missed opportunity!<\/p>\n

A little more than a month after you complete registration, Piktochart does <\/em>send a check-in email\u2014but to ask you to answer a quick five-question survey, not draw you back into the app. It\u2019s the equivalent of going on a date with someone, ignoring them for weeks and weeks, and then texting to say, \u201cHey, how\u2019d I do?\u201d<\/p>\n

WINNER (BY DEFAULT): CANVA<\/strong><\/h4>\n

And the Winner Is\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

As you can see, Canva beat Piktochart four to two.\u00a0Canva did an impressive job of involving the user in the learning process\u2014not just telling her what to do. In addition, Canva\u2019s first run was quite manageable, but not so<\/em> easy you felt like it\u2019d glossed over any main features.<\/p>\n

The Piktochart experience was far less streamlined. There were several different attempts to show the user how to use the product (the ebook, the pop-up boxes, the overlay, the tour), but these attempts were random, occasionally repetitive, and ultimately ineffective.<\/p>\n

The tool also flopped when it came to email engagement\u2014although Canva wasn\u2019t much better. PIktochart had just two small victories: a better welcome email and in-app help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
